Hypertension is a major public health concern among the elderly, often requiring lifelong medication to prevent complications such as stroke, heart failure, and kidney disease (WHO, 2024). Medication adherence is critical in managing hypertension, yet studies indicate that many elderly patients fail to take their medications as prescribed due to factors such as forgetfulness, side effects, financial constraints, and lack of understanding of their condition (Adepoju & Yusuf, 2024).
In Nigeria, non-adherence to antihypertensive medication is a significant contributor to uncontrolled hypertension, leading to increased hospitalizations and mortality among elderly patients (Bello & Musa, 2024). Taraba State, like many other regions, faces challenges in ensuring adequate medication adherence among elderly hypertensive patients due to limited healthcare education, poor follow-up systems, and financial barriers (Oladele et al., 2024).
This study aims to assess medication adherence among hypertensive elderly patients at Federal Medical Centre, Taraba State, and identify the factors that influence their compliance with prescribed treatment.
Despite the availability of antihypertensive medications, many elderly patients in Federal Medical Centre, Taraba State, struggle with adherence, resulting in poor blood pressure control and increased complications (Ibrahim & Hassan, 2024). Factors such as medication costs, lack of caregiver support, and side effects contribute to poor adherence (Muhammad et al., 2024).
Non-adherence to medication remains a major obstacle to hypertension management, necessitating an in-depth investigation into the specific barriers affecting elderly patients in Taraba State.
